Nairobi National Park

Nairobi’s Wild Backyard

Trusted by 100+ partners across Kenya's travel and tourism industry

Overview

Nairobi National Park, established in 1946, is a truly unique wildlife sanctuary; located just 7 to 10 kilometers south of Nairobi’s city center, making it the only national park in the world bordering a capital city. Despite its proximity to urban life, the park spans about 117 square kilometers and offers a remarkably wild experience, with open grass plains, acacia woodlands, riverine forests, rocky gorges, and artificial dams that support a wide range of biodiversity. It is home to over 100 mammal species, including iconic African wildlife such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalos, hippos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and elands. Most notably, it serves as a vital sanctuary for the critically endangered black and white rhinos, making it one of the few places in Kenya where these species can be reliably seen in the wild.

In addition to its mammals, the park is a birding paradise with over 400 species recorded, from migratory birds to endemic and threatened species like the Jackson’s widowbird. Educational and recreational facilities like the Nairobi Safari Walk provide interactive experiences for visitors to learn about Kenya’s wildlife and ecosystems. The animal orphanage offers rehabilitation and care for injured or orphaned animals, while the Ivory Burning Site Monument stands as a powerful symbol of Kenya’s commitment to combating poaching and illegal wildlife trade.

With its combination of rich wildlife, conservation history, and unmatched accessibility, Nairobi National Park remains a symbol of Kenya’s innovative approach to urban conservation and a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a safari experience without leaving the city.
