Akagera National Park

The Wild Heart of Eastern Rwanda

Trusted by 100+ partners across Kenya's travel and tourism industry

Overview

Akagera National Park, situated in eastern Rwanda along the Tanzanian border, spans approximately 1,122 square kilometers and is one of the last remaining protected savannah ecosystems in Central Africa. Named after the Kagera River, which feeds a network of lakes and papyrus swamps within the park, Akagera hosts an exceptional diversity of landscapes; from open grasslands and acacia woodlands to lush wetlands. Once heavily degraded after the 1994 genocide, the park has undergone a remarkable transformation since 2010 under the joint management of African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board.

It is now home to the Big Five including lions and rhinos having been successfully reintroduced, as well as giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species, including rare ones like the shoebill stork. Visitors can enjoy a range of eco-friendly tourism activities such as guided game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema, birdwatching tours, and night safaris, all contributing to conservation and local community development. Akagera stands as a symbol of Rwanda’s commitment to wildlife restoration and sustainable tourism.
